[Review] Cosrx AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid

Cosrx AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid Review:

The term ‘chemical exfoliation’ may sound a bit scary (well, to me anyway!), but it is actually gentler and more effective than physical exfoliation. Physical exfoliation works to get rid of the dead skin just on the surface, and sometimes can be a bit harsh for the skin. When it is harsh it can cause micro-tear, and that is pretty much an invitation to bacteria to come and have an acne party on your face. While chemical exfoliation on the other hand works deeper to loosen up dead skin cells and sebum and at the same time promotes healthy cell regeneration.

I was ready to dip my toes into the chemical exfoliation world, as physical exfoliation was not doing much for me. I was looking for something to brighten my complexion, get rid of a few tiny closed comedones on my forehead, and reduce hyperpigmentations.

And after much research I came to the conclusion that I need an AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) in my routine rather than BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) to help with my concerns. And since COSRX is well known as a brand that produces effective products within an affordable price range, I decided to try their AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid as my first chemical exfoliator.

Claims:

  • Removes old dead skin cells that are trapped inside pores
  • Moisturises and brightens skin
  • Controls sebum and whiteheads
  • Repairs skin damage

Ingredients:

Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycolic Acid, Niacinamide, Sodium Hydroxide, 1,2-Hexanediol, Panthenol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Xanthan Gum, Ethyl Hexanediol

Volume: 100 ml

How to use:

  1. When starting with an acid and especially if you’re a newbie, it is always advised to start slowly and build up tolerance towards it.
  2. Going too fast too soon will cause more damage than good.
  3. It is recommended to use this during your PM routine as this is a high-concentrated liquid.
  4. Use on bare face right after cleansing, preferably with a low pH cleanser (eg. COSRX Good Morning Gel Cleanser), or you can use it after a pH adjusting toner (eg. COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner).
  5. Dispense liquid onto cotton pad or use clean hands and spread all over the face.

Allow some wait time (anywhere from between 10 to 30 minutes, depending on your skin and preference) for the liquid to absorb and do its work before proceeding onto the rest of your skincare steps.

You can also opt to rinse it off with water after the wait time (like I did) if you have sensitive skin and want to avoid irritation.

And most importantly, do not forget to ALWAYS wear sunscreen as AHA is photosensitizing.

My Skin Type: Normal/ Dry skin

As most of other COSRX products, this comes in a sturdy opaque plastic bottle with a pump. The liquid itself is clear, quite runny and it has a faint smell to it. On skin the liquid dries down slightly tacky.

I started off using this once a week for a month and upped my usage to twice a week starting the second month onwards. I applied the liquid post-cleanse using a cotton square and swipe all over my face.

The first time I applied it, I experienced slight tingling but it disappeared rather quickly. I would then leave it on my skin for 30 minutes and rinsed it off before proceeding to my other steps.

The reason I did this is because I want to avoid any irritation (if any) as my skin can be a bit sensitive. But I noticed that leaving for 30 minutes did cause some irritation, so after a few usages I tried leaving it on for 10 to 15 minutes only and my skin is happier.

After continuous usage, I have noticed that my skin is noticeably brighter and softer, and no longer looks dull. The closed comedones I was trying to get rid off are finally gone (thanks to purging!), and my hyper pigmentation has slightly lightened.

I am happy with the results so far! I would repurchase but at the same time I am interested to experiment other types of AHA (lactic and mandelic acid) to see which one would give me the best result.
