[Review] Jung Saem Mool High Tinted Eye Color Pencil in Breeze Plum and Modern Yellow

Jung Saem Mool High Tinted Eye Color Pencil in Breeze Plum and Modern Yellow Review:

I loooove good (overlapping on expensive) eye makeup. Because my eyes are sensitive, and their pigments are really good. And mainly because those designers on those expensive brands have tremendously great taste.

Jung Saem Mool to me is like the MAC of Korea. The same quality the same prices, the same elegance. So, I saw a promotion that gave me these two pencils for a very cheap price and I took it. They say they are highly pigmented, and that’s really important, especially if you use colors that are… not black. We’ll see how they work, and if they keep all their promises.

Claims:

Waterproof and highly pigmented eye pencil. Multifunctional liner with a creamy formula that creates smudge proof lines and rich colors without irritation.

High chroma color: easy to draw texture creates unforgettably vibrant and vivid colors.

Multi-proof: strong multi-proof formula for sweat, water, and sebum enables long lasting makeup.

Multi-liner: Add to use on lips and eyes, edge tip on the bottom helps creating dramatic smoky eye makeup.

Ingredients:

Volume: 0.5g

How to use:

Roll up the liner and apply as needed. Use the edge tip to lengthen the lines and use the round tip to smudge the lines like a shadow. Close the cap tightly after use.

My Skin Type: Dry, sensitive and allergic lips. Very thin, dehydrated and oily eyelids.

It’s always good to start the day with some self confidence boost.

All the information in the package is in English, the Korean information is a sticker they add on top of the white side of the box. Really unusual, but I’m guessing Jung Saem Mool (make up artist, brand creator) thought of international release since the very beginning.

These are the extras that come with the package. You remove the small lid on the side opposite from the pencil and you have a line sharpener and smudger. You remove that piece and you have a pencil sharpener.

You can see here that depending on the position it can be sharp (yellow) or round (plum).

Here I tried to smudge (plum, with the round edge) and to sharpen (yellow, with the sharp edge). The sharpening was easy-peasy! But these pencils dry very very quickly so the smudging didn’t go that well. If you want to smudge I would advise doing it little by little. Short line, smudge, short line, smudge, and so on.

The pencil sharpener. It’s small and all but it’s still quite easy to grip.

Since the pencil is soft you just need to twirl it very very gently and it’ll sharpen almost by itself. If you press the pencil against the sharpener you might just waste the color.

The problem with this sharpener? It is difficult to clean afterwards. I had to clean it later with a toothpick.

These are the colors. You can see that the yellow is highly pigmented. The plum is more natural, as any normal pencil would be. Also the plum color is a little different than the official photos, it’s more plum and less burgundy as the website showed.

After reading the ingredient list I noticed that the plum color has fragrance and the yellow one doesn’t. So I sniffed them, and oddly it’s true! But regardless, it’s so faint that I didn’t notice it after using it for a few days, I noticed after sticking my nose there just because I read the ingredients.

The thing that attracted me to these colors is that the color pickers at Jung Saem Mool are very good at their jobs and all the colors in this collection work for both cold and warm skin undertones without exception. You think a cool tone doesn’t look good with canary yellow? I beg to differ, I felt very pretty while wearing it (and if you doubt me, my veins on my wrists are blue and purple – warm tones have them green). A warm tone looks weird with plum? Well then know that this plum is completely neutral.

The best way to see if a product is water proof is not to put it under water. It’s to either put it under water and scrub (which usually hurts my skin) or to use a cleansing water (which is stronger than water and cleans everything better). I used a cotton pad soaked with the strongest cleansing water I have and scrubbed a lot until this is what was left. I gave up and washed it off with a cream cleanser. So, yes, it is indeed waterproof!

The best way to know if a product is sebum proof is to actually wear it. My eyelids are very oily so they are perfect for testing this. Especially in the hot and humid Korean summer!

The pencil slides easily on the skin, it’s really soft. And as soon as it dries, it’s completely smudge proof! I didn’t notice that mistake on my under eyelid until after the photo and I had to erase it with a cotton pad with makeup remover.

The part of my eyes that have the most sebum are the outer corners so this much is enough to test the product.

If I had to say a problem of these soft pencils… is that you definitely need mascara afterwards. Or to be a skilled makeup user – as I am not.

After the whole day at first glance my eyes were looking the same (left photo). Upon closer look you could see a very very discreet color parting, like small particles. But it’s not something you can see without closing up – and so far it has been the best product I have ever tried when it comes to eye pencils. The best part of it, still didn’t smudge on the corner of my eyes, even with all the sebum.

Tip: Although some mono eyelids and most hooded eye lids look awkward with a single color close to the eyelashes, if you do it from half the eyes outwards with a light color (like yellow, blue, pink) it will still give a nice point to your makeup and it will not look weird at all. Darker colors, like the plum I got, I use them as a point on the corner of my lower eyelid, instead of darkening the area with a brown color.

I tried to use it as a lip pencil just to show you, but I’m really bad at using lip pencils… regardless, here is the result. On the left you have the base color I used. Then on top I added the yellow as a gradient, and on bottom the plum also as a gradient. You can (should) do the opposite: first the pencil and then the lipstick. It’s also easier if you apply the lipstick with a lip brush (which I’m also very bad at using).

Anyway, you can see how simple lipstick can become more lively, or can become more serious and elegant.

I really am surprised with these pencils. I will never again use them as a lip pencil. But I will enjoy them as long as they are around as eye pencils! I mean, resisting my sebum full eyelids? That’s seriously amazing. I would recommend this eye pencil as an eyeliner (aka darker colors) only for people who are more confident in using pencils as eyeliners (pencil liners?) since they dry very quickly and are difficult to correct. But as a point makeup? Lovely.
