My Beauty Diary Sahara Scenedesmus Oil Balancing Mask Sheet Review:
I am a huuuuuge My Beauty Diary fan. Their masks are simple, yet effective and look at that adorable packaging! If I were to be employed by MBD, I would definitely be their employee of the year lol. Which is why when I saw this at the Great Singapore Sale, I was really excited and told myself that I definitely had to buy it!
Sahara Scenedesmus refers to green algae and hence naturally, one if its main ingredients is plankton extract. This marine life is beneficial as it has fatty acids to provide moisture, and is a source of zinc which is helpful in balancing oil and maintaining healthy skin.
Recently, MBD introduced a triple action formula which allows for better skin penetration and absorption of the essence – Aquaroad, Tinysome and Cosphingo.
- Aquaroad: Activates skin’s moisture absorption channel
- Tinysome: Allows full delivery of potent ingredients
- Cosphingo: Seals in the effective ingredients to provide long-lasting moisture
The Aquaroad x Tinysome x Cosphingo combination thus allows for instant permeability and seals in the essence so that the skin remains hydrated and fresh. How awesome is that!
This mask claims to replenish moisture and prevent water loss through constructing a skin barrier. It is also able to protect the skin while ensuring oil control so that the skin appears fresh, hydrated, and non-greasy. Ingredients such as Hippophae Rhamnoides (13th ingredient on the list), Aloe Vera (5th ingredient on the list) and Arnica Montana (15th ingredient on the list) contains soothing extracts to relive skin irritation and redness, while concurrently relieving stress in oily and acne-prone skin.

How to Use:
- After cleansing and toning, peel the pearlescent film off the sheet mask and apply the sheet mask on your face (tip #1: If it’s summer where you’re at right now, pop this product in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before using, you’ll instantly feel refreshed!)
- Leave on for 20 – 30 minutes before removing the mask
- Massage gently with your fingers to facilitate absorption of the remaining essence
- Follow up with your usual skincare routine (you do not need to wash it off)
My Skin Type:
My skin is oily and acne-prone but with a dehydrated base. I produce more oil during PMS (kill me now) so I’ve been getting a few breakouts. Basically, I always ensure my skin isn’t too oily or too dry or the oil production on my face would be able to fry an egg.
My Beauty Diary Sahara Scenedesmus Oil Balancing Mask Sheet Review:
How adorable is the packaging! MBD’s designs never fail to disappoint! They’re always cute but never over-the-top and that peach colour is just too pretty! When I was in Taiwan, I would have bought all of MBD’s sheet masks if not for the lack of luggage space and for the fact that poor little me still had to set aside money for their street snacks hehe. The packaging is simple and easy to open. I detected a faint fragrance upon taking the sheet mask out – not to worry though, fragrance is one of the bottom few ingredients.
The sheet mask is light and smooth in texture. It was also dripping with essence when I took it out of the packet. I took the pearlescent film out and applied the sheet mask to my face. Adherence was great, and the fit was alright. It fitted well on my eye and nose area. I think because my face is relatively smaller (so I’ve been told), the sheet mask usually covers part of my ears and below my chin as well. I’m not complaining though, more TLC for me!
Another awesome thing I like about MBD’s sheet masks is how generous they always are with their essence. Apart from the mask dripping wet, there is usually leftover essence in the packet as well! The essence is transparent and clear. (Tip #2: I usually keep the leftover essence in the refrigerator and pour it on my sheet mask after 30 minutes. Alternatively, you could use it as a light moisturiser for your arms/ legs, or keep it until tomorrow to be used as a morning serum)
After taking off the sheet mask, my skin felt well-hydrated. I also noticed that the redness from my PMS had lightened and was replaced with a slight glow. I massaged the leftover essence into my skin and proceeded with my usual skincare routine sans moisturiser. This is because I live in a humid country and I usually mask at night so I did not want to wake up looking like I rolled around in an oil factory.
As evident, my skin was hydrated and slightly dewy as well. Most importantly, my PMS acne as well as the redness had been reduced. The finish was also not too tacky as the essence absorbed well into my skin afterwards. The next day, I woke up with slightly oily skin but that was to be expected given my oily base. However, as compared to, say, MBD’s aloe vera sheet mask, I felt that my oiliness had been reduced. The brightening effects lasted for about 12 hours.
This mask has 3 strong points – good absorption, oil balancing and hydration. It also brightened my skin, which is an added bonus. Because it is not tacky at all, it can be used in the day, perhaps under makeup if you are preparing for a special event. It soothed my breakouts and did not clog my pores as well.
As a huge fan of MBD, I am quite satisfied with this product. It contains many fruit and plant extracts, and has neither parabens nor fluorescence. There was just one thing I could not figure out though – plankton extract (scenedesmus) is ranked 6th on the ingredients list. Shouldn’t it have been ranked 2nd or 3rd instead? This is my go-to sheet mask, along with MBD’s witch hazel, if I am suffering from breakouts. Do try it out and I hope you’ll like it as much as I did!
