Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Oil Ex Review:
If you follow Korean Skincare Routine, you would most likely get the gist of oil cleansers. Basically, you use them as first cleansers to remove sunscreen and make up which will be then followed by your regular foaming cleanser. Personally, I can live without this type of product because I don’t really wear a lot of make-up (and I don’t even wear sunscreen, que horror!) However, I got the Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Oil Ex as a part of my deluxe kit so might as well try it!

Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Oil Ex Review:
I know, cleaning your face with oil doesn’t sound logical. I mean, doesn’t adding another layer of grease to your face makes it dirtier? Please hear me out before making faces, there’s actually science behind this! I’m not the best student in my GenChem class but I take some principles by heart! One of the very few principles that I remember is “like dissolves like” which pretty much explains as to why we need oil cleansers in the first place.
Basically, it pertains to the polarity of solvents and solutes. Water, known as the universal solvent is actually polar; following the principle, polar solutes would naturally dissolve in water, while non-polar will not. And that’s where you need your non-polar solvents. To put it simply, in your face you can find both polar and non-polar solutes; while water can easily take off the polar solutes, non-polar ones i.e. oil, sunscreen etc. are pretty much out of water’s league.
Sure it will get clean eventually but it takes longer and you would need a lot of your foam cleansers and a lot of tugging before the job gets done. Your skin doesn’t like it and you know it girl! Oil cleansers, on the other hand gets the job easy because oil is non-polar in nature. Are you now convinced to give oil cleansers a shot? Now let’s see Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Oil Ex in action.
Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Oil Ex miniature comes in a pump type bottle which is just perfect for dispensing the product. I have been using this cleansing oil whenever I want faster cleansing because it is somehow more efficient than my The Saem Cleansing Water.
This oil cleanser has a very mild herbal/minty scent that is very appealing to my nose! It feels rich and warm on the skin. I’ve mentioned that I find Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Oil Ex really efficient because I just need about two to three pumps to clean my entire my face!
While I mainly use this to just remove cushion foundation on my face, I have come to like it better than cleansing water because I just need very little amount hence, less messy. I usually check the ingredients of my products at cosdna and it’s worth mentioning that Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Oil Ex contains few ingredients that triggers acne especially Isopropyl Palmitate which scores 4 and 1 as acne and irritant respectively.
Now this may turn off a lot of people especially one’s with sensitive skin. Frankly speaking, I am too, but I still gave it a shot because well, it’s just first cleanser. I just make sure to thoroughly cleanse and rinse with my second cleanser to avoid clogging and breakouts. I could say that it is working alright for I haven’t experience any breakout on the accounts that I have reached for this product.
I have tested it with my matte lipstick (and they are really long wearing and such a pain to remove) and you can see that it can practically remove makeup with a swipe. Not entirely, but not bad either. After all, who removes makeup with a just a swipe right?
Personally, I like pumping it on my palms and massaging it on my entire face. After cleansing with oil, I wash my face with water and foam cleanser. I know, I said that like dissolves like and you might think, now cleaning your face drenched in oil with water would be a pain, right? Well, normally, you cannot mix oil with water but with the help of stabilizing agents, you can pretty much bend laws of chemistry.
If you take a look at Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Oil’s ingredients, you would see PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, PEG-8 Isostearate and Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate and these are emulsifiers. These components make the product more stable and emulsify well with water. Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Oil somehow melts with water so there is definitely no oily feeling after washing it with water. While the oil cleanser leaves no residue, I still make sure to cleanse it thoroughly with water for I don’t want my pores to get clogged and breakout.
Overall, Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Oil Ex is a very effective and efficient oil cleanser. I don’t have anything to compare it with for I don’t have any experience with oil cleansers prior to this but I seem to like it better than my cleansing water especially when I need swift cleansing.
Frankly, I don’t see myself buying this product again. But that’s just because I don’t feel the need too. However, people who wear heavy makeup might consider trying out this product. I do not, however, suggest this product if you happen to have really sensitive skin considering the cosdna analysis.
