[Review] Candy Doll Lip Gloss in Cotton Candy

Candy Doll Lip Gloss in Cotton Candy Review:

My friend recommended Candy Doll products to me, as she was a huge fan of Japanese cosmetic brands that evoked a doll or Gyaru-like look. Japanese model Tsubasa Masuwaka, a popular face for Popteen Magazine and many ads, endorsed the brand, as she evoked the ideal girly beauty of the Candy Doll ideal.

I picked up this lip gloss in a local Japanese skincare and beauty shop after seeing the display of Candy Doll cosmetics. Because the color was fairly neutral with a slight pop of pink, I purchased a tube to try out.

A girly lip gloss that hydrates and brightens with a strong color payoff. Meant to evoke plump doll-like lips.

Key Ingredients: Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopherol

How to use:

Use the angled lip gloss wand to apply the gloss to your lips. (Flat portion to smooth the majority of the product onto the lips and the tip to reach the corners and Cupid’s bow area of the upper lip.) Can build the color with one or more applications of the gloss.

My Skin Type: Normal with occasional dryness and acne

Candy Doll Lip Gloss in Cotton Candy Review:

The angled brush stood out to me, as most of the other lip glosses I’ve used have a more gradual angle versus an abrupt five o’clock angle like the Candy Doll brush. I liked that the brush made it very easy to apply the gloss without problem – flat portion to spread gloss evenly and the tip for precise application and/or touch-ups.

Unlike the other lip glosses I’ve used, this is the stickiest formula I’ve encountered. It’s good if you don’t like your glosses to come off with ease but it felt a little too tacky – almost like the early Lancome Juicy Tubes lip gloss that I wore in middle school.

For removing, I recommend using your regular cleanser or a makeup remover as the skin will still feel tacky if you try to swipe it off with a tissue or napkin. If you don’t use with a lip balm underneath, the gloss is prone to sinking into the fine lines of your lips, which isn’t the best look for anyone.

There is a light fragrance to this lip gloss (not overpowering!), which is good for people who are sensitive to lip products with strong scents – it has a candy-like fragrance to it. When I purchased it, it was expensive compared to other brands like MAC and CHANEL – granted it is a Japanese import but for the amount you’re getting and the application, it seems to fall flat. The packaging is cute with the striped cap but overall it feels a little young compared to the audience it is catering to.

The gloss claims you can build up the color with multiple applications, which was true when I swatched the gloss on my hand. When I wore it on my lips, the color hardly showed up after 2-3 applications. At best, it enhanced my natural lip color but I was disappointed that I wasn’t getting a true color payoff as described.

I would rate this lip gloss 2/5. The brush is unique to this lip gloss and it does make application easier. I did not like how tacky the gloss feels on my lips. It does not look good if applied without a lip balm or lipstick as the base, otherwise it sinks into your lip lines and resembles a sheer film. The color is very sheer and does not reflect a very pigmented look on my lips even with multiple applications. I would not purchase this gloss again.
