[REVIEW+SWATCHES] Clinique Pop Lip Colour + Primer 03 Cola Pop

Clinique Pop Lip Colour + Primer 03 Cola Pop Review:

I’m a big fan of bold lip colors, but am not a fan of the extremely cracked lips that they often leave me with. Clinique’s Pop collection has been receiving a lot of love from their Cheek Pop blushers (especially in South Korea!) to these Pop Lip Colour + Primer lipsticks. The lipsticks come in an impressive range of shades from bright pinks to moody nudes to deep burgundies – you will definitely find (at least) one that tickles your fancy. But are they worth the hype?

Claims (from the Clinique website):

+ Works for all skin types.

+ Luxurious yet weightless formula merges bold, saturated colour with a smoothing primer.

+ Glides on effortlessly to give a modern-velvet finish.

Clinique Pop Lip Colour + Primer 03 Cola Pop Review:

I really like the packaging for the product. One half of the rectangular prism has a reflective surface, and it is the cap that you pull out to reveal the bullet, so it can actually double as a mirror if you’re applying on-the-go. The other half is colored exactly the same as the lipstick shade, which makes picking out the correctly-colored lipstick convenient and easy.

The bullet twists both up and down, so you don’t have to worry about accidentally twisting up more than you need to use and not being able to get it back down. 03 Cola Pop falls under Clinique’s category of “N*des”, and is a deep dark red with brown hues. It applies pretty true to the bullet in terms of the color.

One of the things that I like about this shade and formula is its versatility. You can definitely achieve the deep shade if you swipe on a layer or two straight from the bullet, however, you can also get a very natural look if you dab it on. When I’m in a rush, I cannot commit to doing a full, precise lip look, so I will often just press it on and blend it out with my lips for a light burgundy lip color.

It can also be blended out pretty easily as seen from the photo so you could potentially achieve a gradient lip effect, if that is what you are going for.

For the full deep color, it’s probably best to apply it precisely with a brush to get a very sleek and clean lip look. It does have a semi-matte to matte finish, which is probably the most likely finish to dry out your lips. It applies smoothly with very little tug despite its finish, and does not feel cakey or heavy on the lips.

There is also no fragrance to the product, which is very good for people with more sensitive lips; Clinique is a brand is always really great for people with sensitive skin!

Unfortunately, this lip product does dry my lips out if I wear it for a full day (i.e. more than six hours). If I’m only wearing it for the morning or the afternoon, I can get away with lots of lip balm underneath before application.

As for longevity, this product does great. The color does not bleed over, which is very important considering it’s such a bold lip color. I would say that while the primer aspect of this lip product does not really help in protecting my lips, it definitely does a great job in preserving the color.

Admittedly, there is some fade at around the 5-hour mark or during eating, but even then, it fades away very naturally without any patchiness. Touching up is very easy, provided that your lips are not cracked already.

Ultimately, I really like this lip product mostly because of its color. However, I would say that it’s not particularly impressive in terms of its moisturizing claims. It does decently well in other areas of ease of application, lightness in formula, and longevity.

It’s worth giving it a try if you are interested in any of the colors that they offer, or if you have particularly sensitive lips as Clinique is excellent at catering towards those with sensitive skin.
