Cosrx Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Power Essence Review:
One of the foundations for a solid skincare routine is hydration. We can understand hydration as maintaining appropriate moisture levels in the skin, and this can be done two ways: through humectants, which are ingredients that attract moisture to the skin and through occlusives, which prevent the moisture from evaporating.
Dehydrated skin can happen to anyone, especially if you live in a dry environment. This is my case; while my skin is oily I live in the semidesert, and if I’m not careful the moisture from my skin can easily evaporate and dry it out. This is why I look for humectant and occlusive ingredients in my routine.
In my search for humectants I came across this product from CosRX, a Korean brand that has gained massive popularity outside of Korea in the last few years for their short ingredient lists and effective products.
To my surprise, this product in particular seems to be less popular than other essences from the brand, so I decided to dedicate this review to praise its effectiveness. Spoiler alert: I really like this product.
The first ingredient on the list is Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Water. Sea Buckthorn is considered to have antioxidant and antibacterial properties.
The main stars of the show, however, are the humectants: Butylene glycol, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate and panthenol.
Butylene glycol is a popular humectant you will find in many skincare products, and it offers no irritation for sensitive skin.
Glycerin is a very underrated ingredient, it occurs naturally in our skin, helps maintain the health of our skin cells and it’s great at preventing irritation.
We then have sodium hyaluronate, a form of hyaluronic acid, which you probably already know about. Hyaluronic acid is known for having the ability to retain up to 1000 times its weight in water, which makes it an outstanding humectant ingredient.
Finally, we have panthenol, another humectant that is also popular as a soothing ingredient, being widely used in cosmetics as well as in soothing ointments for babies.
As you can tell from the ingredient list, this essence packs a great deal of humectants which, if used properly in a routine, can give you the hydrated, plump appearance the brand claims. As a result of hydrated, plump skin, fine lines and wrinkles can seem less pronounced.
Why do I say that it needs to be used properly?
If you remember, a humectant ingredient works by attracting moisture. If you use watery products in your routine, or live in a humid environment, the humectants will “grab” the moisture from either the products or the environment. But if you live in a dry environment or don’t provide your skin with enough water, the humectant will grab the moisture from anywhere it can, even if it is your own skin, which can result in dehydration.
This is why, whenever you are using a humectant, like hyaluronic acid in your skincare routine, you need to make sure you are providing enough water to your skin by using other products, especially if the city you live in isn’t particularly humid.
With this knowledge in mind, I used this product in conjunction with watery toners and moisturizers that helped to seal the skin and prevent the moisture from evaporating.
A little trick that helped me see an immediate plumping effect on my skin, was applying the essence and use a sheet mask right away. I personally used reusable cotton masks, soaking them in my favorite toner or just plain water, as opposed to individual single-use sheet masks to reduce waste.
The fabric works as a barrier to prevent the moisture from evaporating too quickly, which allows the humectants to retain as much water as possible.
The results were a plump, glowy skin and diminished fine lines. I also liked to use this essence in the mornings, as the glycerin gave my skin a beautiful smooth texture, where makeup looked flawless.
This is a product that I recommend for anyone with dehydrated skin and for people with oily and dry skin types as well. I can say for sure that I like this product more than similar toners, like the iconic Hadalabo Gokujyun Lotion, which also contains hyaluronic acid.
The plumping effects I got from this essence made it a favorite of mine for the winter and for the weekly sheet mask sessions many of us like to indulge in.
If you want to try a product with hyaluronic acid and you like the simple but effective ingredient lists of CosRX’ products, I’d say give this a go. I didn’t regret it.
