[REVIEW] Estee Lauder Micro Essence Skin Activating Treatment Lotion

Estee Lauder Micro Essence Skin Activating Treatment Lotion Review:

I’ve been flirting with this essence since January 2014 when it was first released, however for this product to reach the shelves of EU it took a while, as essences are usually promoted and developed mostly for the Asian markets. I finally managed to get a bottle on March 2018 from Notino for 60.90 euro and I’ve been using it twice a day since.

+ Estee Lauder promises this lotion will reveal the skin’s youthful and angelic glow, and a big percentage of the women that tried this product (94%) noticed a healthier and more beautiful skin.

+ Formulated for all skin types, particularly ideal for lack of energy/vitality, it will give smooth and supple skin, it will aid in age resistance, and will deal with dryness and dehydration. It’s tested by dermatologists and ophthalmologists, it’s fragrance free and will not clog pores.

+ Part of the marketing for China, Korea and Japan was a teaser trailer showing 3 professional women representing each country, trying out this product for 30 days and getting pictures taken every day. In the end of the teaser all 3 showed brighter, smoother, and better hydrated skin.

Estee Lauder Micro Essence Skin Activating Treatment Lotion Review:

The micro essence comes in a standard box from Estèe, light blue, with an information sheet in several languages. The bottle is a luxurious sandblasted glass one, and it has a nice golden closure cap that clicks shut after a few turns. The dispenser is fine by me, it helps with being economical with the product and not use more than required. I would prefer the option of a spray for the consistency it has.

The micro essence lotion has a watery slightly viscous consistency, it will drop from the bottle in big drops from a drop dispenser, you will need to move it up and down to get the product needed. It will run easily like water on the back of my hand. However, when I rub my palms together I can feel the slight viscosity.

Compared with my other essences La Mer the treatment lotion which has a colorless gelatinous consistency, and Shiseido Benefiance NutriPerfect Pro-Fortifying Softener which is an opaque bona fide lotion/emulsion like essence, it is definitely very watery so I can see why people would use it on cotton pads.

In my opinion it is a waste of good product and I use it by applying with my palms. A little goes a long way, and I usually use 3 drops for every application, as I like to use it as in the 7 skin method, although I only repeat it 2 or 3 times, rarely 7.

Starting from the center to the outer areas of my face and moving from chin to forehead, I gently tap it and the first time I apply my thirsty skin will completely absorb this hydrating lotion in mere seconds. The later applications are more luxurious, and I can feel the light viscosity and concentration of the product.

When I apply on my face it has no fragrance, if anything it smells fresh and faintly acidic, it must be from the fermented ingredients, and it goes away instantly when it comes in contact with oxygen when it evaporates. I have a sensitive nose, others did not notice any fragrance at all. Another essence by Estèe lauder I tried on the counter, the RE-NUTRIV Ultimate Lift Floralixir™ Dew Regenerating Water had such an overpowering fragrance that started fishy and ended heavily floral in attempts to “hide” the fishy, it gave me headaches for hours. I was so relieved that Estèe Lauder micro essence did not have any unpleasant or overpowering aroma. If you are sensitive to fragrances this is the product for you.

It seems the latest thing in skin care and alternative health is fermentation, although Estèe Lauder had the science know how and used fermented ingredients for decades, for instance in Crème La Mer and the famous broth of fermented seaweed.

In the micro essence the star of the show is Bifida Ferment Lysate which is the second ingredient in the list after water. Research claims it repairs the skin barrier, repairs skin DNA, and will increase resistance and desensitize skin. So, this makes it perfect for people with sensitive skin that look for something soothing but also repairing that will help build a good skin defense.

A healthy skin barrier is fundamental and it’s what is needed for our products to work and for the skin to stay well hydrated. The other fermented ingredient is Lactobacillus Ferment, a probiotic found in yogurt, kefir and kimchi or other fermented foods, its purpose is to aid good bacterial balance on the skin. Usually products strip the skin from bacteria especially cleansers or alcoholic toners, so this essence uses Lactobacillus to bring the healthy balance so the skin is protected and strong.

Peg 75 is an emulsifier deriving from lanolin that will help bind water and oil in this product, it’s also a humectant which means it holds water and hydrates, and also a lubricant giving skin instant smoothness and softness.

Propanediol is the handsome brother of bad and ugly propylene glycol. Propanediol is a glycol that comes from corn (I’m pretty sure Estèe being an American company uses this), it assists other ingredients to be absorbed from the skin the same way BHA does, it’s also a viscous humectant and a preservative.

Butylene Glycol and Pentylene Glycol are also humectants. Same with Betaine a humectant used widely. Hyaluronate sodium will improve flakiness and overall appearance.

Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 is a substance that “freezes” the muscles like botox would, and smooths expression lines.

Acetyl Glucosamine is essential for skin health and elasticity as it promotes natural hyaluronic acid and collagen production, as well as anti-inflammatory. It is a good anti-aging ingredient.

Trehalose aids with hydration and antioxidation, caffeine will reduce redness because it constricts the blood vessels, and might aid with puffiness, although I don’t believe it reaches so far deep in the tissues.

Chamomile is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties since the ancient times, also it does aid in brightness and signs of aging like sun damage, and it will heal those damages.

Citric Acid is an AHA that will reduce pores, will aid in cell turnover, it has brightening properties, and it’s an antioxidant that will slow the aging process. It is in a low concentration and I don’t think it will irritate those with sensitive skin.

Few preservatives that are in low concentration, I don’t really think they are a problem, however one day I hope the company will try to use better ones in the future.

As I said earlier I’m using it for an entire month, day and night. I love it because it is really cooling and soothing on application, and although the progress is slow, it does give you your money’s worth the longer you use it. This product will not convince you in a sample. One needs many applications and a good routine.

It has soothed my atopic skin, rebalanced the hydration, I started using it after an accidental skin barrier disaster so it really proved to me that it does offer the repairing it promises. It is smoothing, I think because of the small amount of AHA.

I still haven’t noticed a difference in broken blood vessels or sun damage, however I don’t expect miracles from a watery essence, this is the type of effect a concentrated product should offer. Maybe in another month I will notice the brightening effect on my freckles.

It did make the overall tone of skin change to the better, it is not dull or tired anymore, and trust me I’m a very tired mom in my late 30’s, it has given me this well rested glow. Perhaps it’s the angelic glow they claim this micro essence offers.

As far as small lines are concerned I did notice an increase in elasticity and plumping, however no effect on the expression lines. It didn’t break me out, and few red spots I had already when I started using they healed pretty quickly.

Overall I believe it performed extremely well considering that it’s not a concentrated serum or ampoule, and it did deliver results, that exceeded my low expectations. I simply wanted a non-irritating hydrating essence, but ultimately it has benefitted my skin in other areas as well.

Being so pleased with this, I can affirmatively say yes, I WOULD repurchase this product, and would recommend it as very good dupe of other luxury essences like SKII Facial Treatment Essnece, and it would save you lots of $$$ in the long run.

As promised by the company, it is well suited for all types of skin, even atopic like mine.
