How much important an eyeliner for you? If I have to make a scale from 1 to 10, I will give 10 (or at least 9.5). It means, I can’t live without it even for a day or my life won’t be perfect without it. Sounds like a drama, LOL.
My eyes are hooded and not big, that’s why I use eyeliner everyday to make them look bigger and sharper. And since I use it everyday, I finish my eyeliner pretty quickly. Hence I buy eyeliner oftentimes and I’m keen on trying the new ones which I’ve never tried before. Just to explore and find the best product out there.
This is my first eyeliner from Holika Holika. I haven’t tried many products from this brand yet, but I read some good reviews about this eyeliner – it’s also popular enough in my country, so I gave it a try. Fret not, here is my review about Holika Holika Jewel light Waterproof Eyeliner in shade 01 – Black Gem.

Holika Holika Jewel Light Waterproof Eyeliner in shade 01 Black Gem Review:
Holika Holika Jewel light Waterproof Eyeliner is a gel-pencil eyeliner. So it’s not a surprise if it comes in a pencil type. Well, it is skinny and a bit long with glossy body. Every shade has different color that represents the shade itself, since I chose shade 01 – Black Gem so the package is black colored.
I think there’s nothing special from the package, moreover it was only wrapped with plastic without box. But the jewel patterns and silver-metallic letters on its body makes this eyeliner a little bit more attractive. The skinny pencil is handy and comfortable too.
Holika Holika Jewel light Waterproof Eyeliner has a lot of pretty shades (15 shades, if I’m not wrong) that you can choose as you like. Every shade contains glitters (or shimmers?), deserves the name Jewel-light.
But there is the only one that comes without glitters and provides matte result, which is shade number 01 – Black Gem, the shade I’m reviewing now. That’s why I picked this shade because it doesn’t come with glitters so it’s wearable for my daily makeup.
From the swatch on my hand, you could see that it’s matte-black. The color is super pigmented and intense. And the finishing result is dead matte. It should be one of my favorite eyeliners since I really love its true matte-black result.
Unfortunately, the texture of this gel eyeliner is terrible. It couldn’t glide smoothly as its thick and sticky texture, though the core itself is soft enough. I could get a smooth swatch on my hand, but when applied on my eyes the eyeliner is very clumpy, thus I couldn’t draw a neat stroke. You can see on my photos, the gel eyeliner clumped on my lashes and the outer line is kinda rough and flaky. Messy!
Holika Holika Jewel-light Waterproof Eyeliner has 2 in1 concept, as an eyeliner and eyeshadow in one package. But I couldn’t blend it well as an eyeshadow since it became matte and set to skin as quick as applied, moreover the texture is thick and somewhat sticky. I don’t know what should I do with this eyeliner, LOL.
Ah, by the way, I got a hard time to find the way how to pull the core out. After used it about 3 times, I was so confused since I couldn’t twist the bottom side to get more eyeliner out (you know, we usually twist the bottom part of our Korean auto pencil-liner to take the product out).
I thought my eyeliner was broken, LOL. Then I read on a blogger’s review that this product could be sharpened like usual pencil eyeliner. Ha! The plastic looks so tough but it is actually super soft and intended to be sharpened.
Like the name, it is waterproof and having a good staying power. The color’s longevity is super great too. I use it from morning to night and the black color is still distinct without fading away. Hate to say it, but the not-smudgeproof formula ruins everything.
I used it on my waterline but it’s smudge after 4 hours. Well, not that too bad smudge, but the dark stain is still noticeable around my eye.
Pencil eyeliner is the best choice for beginners since it’s easier to draw precise lines, but Holika Holika Jewel light Waterproof Eyeliner, especially in shade Black Gem is not for the beginners, in my opinion. The texture is totally failed, what’s more it’s hard to sharpen the tip of the core so you might end up with a messy line instead of the neat one.
However, the waterproof formula and the intense black color are still being good points from this product. I really like to draw bold and thick eye-line, so I usually combine this product with my liquid eyeliner from Dolly Wink or Maybelline to draw the outer line, so the flakes will be forgiven.
About the thick and clumpy texture, I guess it’s because this shade has dead matte finish, I’m not sure though. So, if you’ve ever tried other shades of Holika Holika Jewel light Waterproof Eyeliner, don’t forget to share your thoughts on the comment box. I may buy the other shades of this eyeliner if they have better texture, since it’s affordable and having a lot of pretty colors. But for this shade, I don’t want to repurchase it.
