Mizon Skin Power Original First Essence Review:
First treatment essences (FTE/s) sounded like miracle workers, at least from other people’s reviews. So, I really wanted to try one, and because there were so many I decided to try one from Mizon. Why Mizon? Because it had a high percentage of the galactomyces ferment filtrate and the price seemed reasonable too. I hadn’t tried many FTEs before this one, so I didn’t really know how to judge it from the ingredient list. The fact that it didn’t contain triethanolamine was also another reason I decided to choose this FTE over some others.
Since I hadn’t yet had the chance to try many products from Mizon, this seemed to be a good time to try out some Mizon products, so I could get an idea of whether I liked their products or not. Also Mizon seemed to be a brand that a lot of people liked, and so seemed like a trustworthy brand to try out.

Mizon Skin Power Original First Essence Review:
Mizon as a brand seems to have hit and miss products for me – the good night white sleeping pack left weird residue on my face, but the snail recovery gel worked perfectly fine for me. So, when this first treatment essence (FTE) first arrived, I was both curious and excited to try it out and see how it would work for me. Previously I had used another FTE that didn’t do much for me so I was hopeful this one would work out better for me.
The FTE comes in a large frosted (plastic?) bottle, with a typical toner type top. The kind with a small hole and you can tip out the watery liquid into your hand. The packaging itself is decent, it has a plain and simple design, which fits Mizon’s brand actually.
It feels solid, and looks like a nice large bottle of FTE, which is actually quite a nice feeling or at least I think it is. Because who doesn’t love to have a large bottle of a product rather than a tiny small bottle?
The actual essence is very watery, and runny and it looks yellowish in the bottle, but once it is in your hand it looks completely clear, like water. The only reason you can tell it’s not water, is the scent and the texture or consistency of the liquid.
The FTE does have quite a strong scent, it’s hard to explain but it reminds me of ginger, a bit spicy but also a little sweet. Maybe fermented ginger, well something like that anyway, I didn’t mind the scent, it smells refreshing in a way.
The Mizon Skin Power original FTE claims that it contains a whopping 94.5% of the galactomyces ferment, which is the star of this. The galactomyces is a fermented yeast product which apparently helps prevent aging and rejuvenates skin. It also contains niacinamide which is commonly used in products to help brighten skin up, as well hyaluronic acid which is good for moisturising skin.
The FTE was watery and it felt refreshing when I applied it to my skin, and the scent although strong was quite pleasant too. I was quite heavy handed with applying it, hoping that the yeasty goodness would do its magic on my skin.
But honestly, this FTE was the one product I could not finish, after I started patch testing it. For me, this was surprising because I’ve never reacted to any product before this one – and I almost never patch test things either.
The first week I used it, it seemed to be fine, I had no issues with this product at all. My skin seemed to drink it up, but then during the second or third week I was using it my lips started to burn. “Your lips?”, you might say, “but who applies FTE to their lips?” Well, I didn’t on purpose, but some must have gotten on my lips from my hands? Anyway, I woke up to bright red, burning lips, but the first day I didn’t think too much about my lips and kept using the FTE.
The next day the skin on my lips began to peel off, and my lips constantly burned unless I had them covered in lip balm, and it was then that I realised the only thing that had changed was this FTE. I hadn’t started using any other new products (no new toothpaste or lip balm), other than this FTE.
I still don’t understand what exactly caused this reaction, I’ve scoured the ingredients list and pretty much all of the ingredients are ones I’ve used in other products without any reaction. I stopped using it on my face, because I was concerned that it would irritate my face in the same way if I kept using it.
Once my lips healed, I wanted to try this FTE out again, but I guess after a day or two I always stopped using it because I was worried it would irritate my skin or make it peel like it had my lips. Of course, I can’t say with a hundred percent certainty that this FTE caused my lips peel, but they did heal and stop stinging after I stopped using it on my face.
Honestly it was such a shame that this product didn’t work out for me, I was quite disappointed and unsure about ferments for a long time. But I’ve used the Benton fermentation essence, and that didn’t cause me any problems. It just seems like the scent in this somehow caused a major reaction for me, so I guess anyone with sensitive skin should steer clear of this FTE. After using this, I’ve been avoiding most products with scents and trying to use ones that are okay for sensitive skin.
However, it bothered me a lot to have this Mizon FTE sitting around in my bathroom, half full and just sitting there. At first, I wrote this review out, but I felt bad to submit it without testing again, and well because I was frustrated and curious to see what would happen.
So, after writing this negative review, I started to patch test it on my left cheek and the left side of my neck. Each morning I anxiously checked to see my face and neck, and I carefully washed my hand after applying it.
A month has passed with me doing this, and well so far there has been no bad reaction. My cheek still has skin… heh so I guess despite that initial bad reaction my skin is okay with it now?
It is possible that my moisture barrier was compromised, and that caused the bad reaction? Because the first few times I tried to use it (after the initial bad reaction) it did make my skin sting, but it doesn’t anymore, which makes me think that maybe my moisture barrier was compromised and that’s why it made my skin sting.
Initially I thought my left cheek was less dehydrated with this FTE, but actually it isn’t. It just looked that way until I looked closely. But I noticed on some mornings it looks less red than the right, but whether it’s just a coincidence or because of this FTE I’m not sure.
Because of my initial bad reaction, I doubt I would repurchase this FTE or frankly any FTE. This is the third FTE I’ve tried, and until now I’ve seen nothing that makes me think “oh wow~ this FTE is amazing” instead I mostly feel like I’m just putting scented water on my face.
I’ll finish this bottle, but unless it does something miraculous in the next couple of weeks I won’t repurchase it. I think people with sensitive skin or compromised moisture barriers should avoid it, but other than that I think it works for all skin types, from oil to combination, normal and dry.
