[Review] My Scheming Bamboo Charcoal + Volcano Mud Extract Pore Minimizing Mask

My Scheming Bamboo Charcoal + Volcano Mud Extract Pore Minimizing Mask Sheet Review:

My Scheming is a Taiwanese sheet mask brand that is endorsed by Taiwanese singer/ actress Ella Chen. I am a fan of Ella because of her quirky antics and when I saw this in Taiwan, I was so excited that I bought 4 different flavours! I also bought 8 of their loose flavours such as the barley, caviar, and milk brightening masks. Call me superficial but I am attracted to pretty and cute stuff hehe. I mean, look at that adorable packaging! I have heard good things about My Scheming so I was very excited to try this out!

This mask claims to use bamboo charcoal and volcano mud to balance oil production, tighten the pores and remove dull and rough skin. It helps in achieving more radiant skin.

Research has shown that in many Asian countries, bamboo charcoal is known as a healer’s “black diamond”. It is able to absorb impurities and can be used as an effective treatment for acne by deep cleansing the pores. The volcano mud extract is a natural skin purifier to address problems such as wrinkles, damaged skin, and acne.

In addition, a quick inspection of the ingredients list shows some promising ingredients such as willow bark extract, calendula extract and chamomile extract.

Willow bark extract has anti-inflammatory properties to cleanse oily skin and contains antioxidants. Similarly, chamomile extract can help to decongest pores and is a herbal extract for acne, while calendula extract is able to repair dry and damaged skin

Volume: 30 ML

How to Use:

  1. After cleansing and toning, apply the sheet mask on your face (pop it in the freezer for a more refreshed feel!)
  2. Leave on for 20 – 30 minutes before removing the mask
  3. Massage gently with your fingers to facilitate absorption of the remaining essence
  4. Follow up with your usual skincare routine (you do not need to wash it off)

My Skin Type:

My skin is oily and acne-prone but with a dehydrated base. My skin condition now is within normal range, with 2 active pimples due to the lack of sleep.

Similar to MBD sheet masks, My Scheming has become one of my few favourite brands. The packaging usually features adorable cartoon-like drawings and is simple and endearing. It is perfect for a budget sheet mask junkie such as myself!

I opened the packaging by tearing on the small slit and out of the packet, there was a very light, almost negligible medicinal fragrance (possibly because fragrance is last on the ingredients list).

The thickness of the mask is somewhat between thin to medium, and the amount of essence on the mask was adequate. It was not dripping like MBD’s masks but had the right amount for me to apply on my face.

Some My Scheming mask sheets are almost invisible in terms of thickness, but I reckon this technology was not used on their bamboo + volcano series. Nonetheless, this did not affect its performance.

The consistency of the essence was watery but closer to a milky type. In the packet, there were still some leftover essence left so I popped it in the fridge and reapplied it on my sheet mask after 30 minutes. The fit was just right but the adherence wasn’t too great on the sides of my nose and the sides of my face. I continuously pressed the air bubbles out to flatten the mask at the sides of my nose but to no avail.

I had this one for 40 minutes before taking it off. Upon inspection, my pores became significantly smaller. yippeeee!! My skin was also brightened and the 2 pimples that I had seemed to have reduced in redness. I decided not to pat the essence in to see if the remaining would be easily absorbed (and also because I was lazy) and lo and behold, it left behind a matte finish after 7 minutes of taking off the sheet mask.

Although it did not leave a tacky finish, my skin felt slightly dry, but nothing that my CosRx snail essence could not fix. Thus I followed up with my usual sheet mask skincare routine of solution, eye cream and essence, gently patting all the goodness into my skin.

For some reason, I thought that the mask would be black in colour lol. I like that this mask does what it claims in minimising my pores and also in reducing the intensity of my breakouts. When applying my skincare products, I also felt that my skin had become softer and was tender to the touch. It also evened out my complexion.

I have tried this both in the day and also at night, and I think it is suitable for both occasions. In the day, it can be used before makeup application (remember to apply your moisturiser and sunscreen first!) as it provides a soft and more even base.

I used it in the night and when I woke up the next morning, my skin remained matte and oil production was also lesser. The effects lasted for about 12 to 15 hours.

Given the price, I am quite happy with this mask. It is suitable for people with oily skin types because it helps to clarify the pores and control sebum production. Its affordable price also makes it a must-have for any budget beauties out there who want to get rid of their pesky pimples. This is cheap and good, and I would definitely repurchase 10 more boxes to fulfil my sheet mask obsession!
