Naruko NRK Collagen Booster Firming Mask Review:
I’ve only heard about Naruko a few months ago, but it seems to be quite a popular brand and can be found at any local Watsons or Guardians outlet in Singapore and Malaysia. As previously mentioned, I am a huge fan of the Taiwanese sheet mask brand My Beauty Diary. It seems like Naruko originates from Taiwan as well and I wanted to see how it would fare as compared to MBD. Not to mention, that packaging is so adorable and pretty! Hence, I bought a box of Naruko’s collagen masks as well as other loose flavours such as tea tree, rose and narcissus.
Collagen is essential for healthy and elastic skin. It can also minimise scars and improve the skin tone. Let’s check out how this one fared ☺
This claims to make the skin ‘as elastic as a spring bed’. It helps to boost the firmness of the skin so that the skin will become tight and plump. The Naruko Singapore website explains the different functions of the different properties in this mask, which I have summarised below:
Purified Water, Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Xanthan Gum, Soluble Collagen, Phenoxyethanol, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Ascophyllum Nodosum Extract, Disodium EDTA, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Butylene Glycol, Hydrolyzed Elastin, Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan) Extract, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sorbitol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Fragrance, Arginine, Methylisothiazolinone, Hydrolyzed Pearl, Sea Salt, Carbomer, Polysorbate 20, Chlorphenesin, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4
Volume: 25 ML
How to Use:
- After cleansing and toning, peel the pearlescent film off the sheet mask and apply the sheet mask on your face (I mentioned this tip in my MBD Sahara Scenedesmus review but feel free to pop this in the refrigerator for 30 mins for a more refreshed feel!)
- Leave on for 15 – 20 minutes before removing the mask
- Massage gently with your fingers to facilitate absorption of the remaining essence
- Follow up with your usual skincare routine (you do not need to wash it off)
My Skin Type: My skin is oily and acne-prone but with a dehydrated base. I tend to break out during PMS.
Naruko NRK Collagen Booster Firming Mask Review:
I am such a sucker for cute and pretty packaging. In my opinion, the best ones on the market seems to be the DearPacker brand series, which features their Jeju flower collection as well as the travel series. I’ll be doing a review of it soon! Naruko’s packaging is adorable and simple. It is inexpensive as well, for those days where you want to pamper yourself but don’t want to burn a hole in your wallet.
This sheet mask was more on the medium side in terms of thickness. Upon opening up the packaging, it was dripping with essence and I detected a clean and light floral scent. I took the pearlescent film out and applied the sheet mask to my face. The fit was alright.
As mentioned in the previous review, I have a smaller face so I did not need to adjust the sheet mask or cut slits. However, for those who feel that the fit might be a little off, I recommend cutting a few slits for better fit and thus better absorption.
The adherence was just average, as I could not get it to stick to the areas around my nose despite pressing it down and pushing all the air bubbles out (Tip: I usually wear my spectacles over the mask to ensure that the sheet mask stays down lol).
Similar to MBD, Naruko is also very generous with the amount of essence. Although the mask was already dripping wet, there was still a considerable amount of essence in the packet. I usually reapply the essence on my sheet mask after 30 minutes but this time around, I sealed the packaging to prevent contamination and kept it in the refrigerator to be used as a morning serum the next day.
I had this on for 30 minutes before taking it off. As can be seen, my skin is now brighter and more even. I had some redness which was also reduced. However, I did not detect any hydrating and moisturising effects as claimed. In addition, my skin felt significantly tighter (due to the collagen perhaps?).
However, this tightness remained at an uncomfortable level – imagine smiling and your skin getting stretched – that was how I felt after taking off the mask. I patted the remaining essence in and it was absorbed quickly after about a minute and a half.
I followed up with my usual masking skincare routine of serum and CosRx snail essence which always worked well to seal in the moisture for my skin. However, this mask was more on the dry side and I had to top it off with my usual moisturiser despite living in a humid country.
While my skin was brightened, its moisturising properties did not work well. The finish was not tacky at all and the next day I woke up with less oily skin than usual (probably due to the lack of hydration) which I did not particularly like because my skin felt tight. The brightening and smoothening effects lasted for about a day.
I am not a fan of collagen masks as it usually does not work exceptionally well on me. However, I bought a box of 10 so I’m going to continue using this mask sigh. Oh well, at least it provided me with some brightening effects.
Due to its non-tacky finish, this mask can be used in the day and under makeup, provided that you moisturise well. It did not break me out as well, which is quite an important factor for me.
I was impressed with the ingredients list which is relatively minimal and did not contain any parabens or colourants. I am unclear if it’s just my skin type but because this mask is relatively mild, I would recommend it to those who have oily and/ or acne-prone skin.
For people with dry skin, perhaps a more nourishing mask such as Naruko’s Snail Essence Intense Hydra Repair Mask is more suitable. I would not purchase this again as there are better masks out there for my skin type.
Nonetheless, I am a new user of Naruko products, and am curious to try more of their other series which would hopefully work better on me!
