[REVIEW] New 2018 VDL + PANTONE 18 Expert Color Primer For Eyes Serenity

VDL + PANTONE 18 Expert Color Primer For Eyes Serenity Review:

A while ago I asked around regarding the eye primers, people would recommend for an oily eyelid that’s sensitive to drying eye primers (which apparently are a lot of them). I got two results and since the other one was difficult to gain access to I ended up taking this one instead.

Now, I was going for their regular primers, BUT the Pantone editions have more product for a very good price (6.5g for 15 vs 13g for 22) so I took this one instead! VDL Expert Color Primer focuses on matte eyeshadows, my favorites which I always have a hard time wearing. And it has the advantage it looks like unicorn blood.

Claims:

+ The primer from the VDL + Pantone collection from the Ultra Violet color of the year.

+ This eyeshadow primer treats the optimal lid surface for eye color application. Added with pearl powders, it keeps eyelids soft and supple while keeping eyeshadow colors vibrant and fresh all day without creasing.

+ Primer specifically for matte shadows and to tone up the darkness of the eyelids.

Ingredients:

Cyclopentasiloxane, Talc, Isododecane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Distearammonium Hectorite, Mica, VP / Hexadecenecopolymer, Polyisobutene, Beeswax, Pearl Powder, Dimethicone, Polyvinylpyrrolidone, Trihydroxy Stearate, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Bismuth Oxychloride, Titanium Dioxide, Silica Dimethylsilylate, Propylene Carbonate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, , Methicone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexyl Glycerin, 1,2-hexanediol, Ultramarine

Volume: 13g

How to use:

1. Make sure the eyelid is oil free before applying. Don’t apply too much product.

2. Dot the product three times on your eyelid and gently pat it spread with your finger.
(personal experience says it’s a good idea to apply one dot on the bottom eyelid if you apply makeup or base makeup there)

3. If, like me, you have oily eyelids then just pat them with tissue before applying this.

4. Always let the primer dry completely before applying the eyeshadow.

My Eye Lid Skin Type: Oily, thin, sensitive eyelids with a lot of creases.

As you can see it’s basically twice the size of a normal primer and it makes me so happy knowing I can just use it without saving! I have all of this and have been using eyeshadow way more often than I used to thanks to this godly amount.

The applicator is quite normal, like your lip-gloss applicator. Nothing special here.

This amount is enough for each eyelid. So, instead of dotting it sometimes I just flatten the brush on the eyelid. Yes, I’m lazy, but the amount is the same and in the end I always have to use my fingers anyway.

You can see the primer is completely transparent once spread but that it does lift up the skin color ever so slightly. On the arm it may not seem like much but on an eyelid the difference is significant – the eyelid color becomes almost the same as the rest of my face!

On the left image you can see eyeshadow on the primer (top) and without primer (bottom). You can see that the shines become more intense and less sparse with the primer. The color is the same (I put three layers on each) but it ends up looking more intense with the primer.

On the right you can see my arm after I scrubbed the eyeshadow as clean as I could with my greasy hand. I tried my best to erase it and whereas on the bottom it almost completely disappeared, on the top there was always a leftover that I could only remove with a cleanser.

For reference, this eyeshadow is shimmer.

With a matte eyeshadow you can see that 1) it didn’t settle on the crease or wrinkles and lasted over 5 hours 2) the dark color of my eyes does not prop out and doesn’t end up darkening the eyeshadow color.

So, for matte eyeshadows it’s exactly what they promise!

With a glitter eyeshadow the story is different. First, it is not made for glitter, I simply tried it out of interest. Second, if I apply matte before I apply the glitter then it performs as well as before.

But if I apply only glitter it’s still better than without the primer. With the eye open it looks the same as when I just applied (which is already a step up), and it does settle on the crease but only after three hours (this type of 100% glitter shadows usually don’t last 1h on me if applied without anything under them).

Now, I recommend this for any skin type and for matte shadows. For shimmer shadows it behaves quite well too!
For glitter shadows… If you love “glitter only” then maybe get one specifically for that, if you always use matte or shimmer as a base color anyway then why not use this one if you get it for matte anyway?

There are primers that “go for every eyeshadow type” but you must keep in mind that I have an oily eyelid that is sensitive to drying primers, and my skin is very thin. So for the comfort this one is the right one for me, and if I decide to go fully glitter… I’ll probably get the glitter focused VDL primer – since I am so satisfied with this one!
