[REVIEW] OMI Menturm Sun Bears Strong Super Plus SPF50+/PA++++

OMI Menturm Sun Bears Strong Super Plus SPF50+/PA++++ Review:

After seeing this sunscreen float around the AsianBeauty sub-reddit and various beauty blogs, when my friend visited Japan for a bit, I almost immediately jumped at the opportunity when I saw it on a hugely discounted price in the store based on my friend’s window shopping pictures. A cheapskate, I definitely am, haha.

“Menturm Sun Bears Strong Super Plus is a Japanese sunscreen milk with a powdery, smooth and silky finish for outdoor activities and sports. It features high UV protection that is resistant to water, sweat, and sebum.

It contains a blend of Scutellaria Baicalensis Extract and Glycyrrhetic Acid to prevent dry, rough skin.

Its lightweight, yet non-drying formula leaves the skin feeling silky smooth with no residue/white cast that is ideal for outdoor activities and sports.

  • For face and body.
  • Resistant to water, sweat, and sebum.
  • Doubles as a makeup base.
  • Removeable with a makeup remover.
  • Has a mild grapefruit fragrance.

The 2015 (current) version is renewed to be ultra-fine to feel and look more undetectable on the skin.”

Based on the ingredients, it can be observed that this sunscreen contains both physical and chemical sunscreen filters. In terms of physical filters, it contains both Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. On the other hand, its chemical filters are Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (AKA Octinoxate) and Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (AKA Uvinul A Plus).

It should also be noted that this sunscreen contains parabens (Methylparaben, Propylparaben), silicone (Silica) and fragrance.

Hence, if sensitive to any of the ingredients above, please do steer clear (or at least patch test before use to note down any possible skin sensitivity or irritation).

Volume: 28mL

How to use:

1. As the sunscreen is a bi-phase (two layer type) product, shake well before use.

2. Apply and spread evenly onto the skin by patting it in gently.

My Skin Type: Sensitive (prone to redness), Combination, Acne-prone, Dehydrated

OMI Menturm Sun Bears Strong Super Plus SPF50+/PA++++ Review:

Housed in a lightweight, opaque bottle, the Menturm Sun Bears Strong Super Plus is definitely one of the cutest sunscreens I’ve had the pleasure of owning. It has a twist-off red-colored cap which I find to be advantageous – especially when travelling as it reduces the risk of any leakages.

Instructions/details on the back and on the original packaging are fully in Japanese, but after shaking the bottle a few times and having prior experience with similar sunscreens, I noticed it immediately to be a product that must be shaken before use to ensure the proper consistency is achieved upon usage. So, please do take note of that!

Twisting open the red cap, a thin, watery consistency spilled from the small opening. Thus, similar to the Sunkiller Perfect Strong Moisture. I had to merely estimate the amount of product to dispense in the palm of my hand instead of applying the “two finger rule” (usually used for more creamy sunscreens) due to its runny nature. The product itself was also noticeably white in color.

Applying it on the skin, the product has a sort of “powdery” feeling which might please those with combination-oily skin types. However, it does not feel that drying either so those with drier skin types shouldn’t be too worried.

Unfortunately, its advertised claim of not having a white cast does not ring true on my medium skin tone. But it is less visible if you don’t apply that much (as seen in the pictures here) or if you adhere to the usual wait time of 15-30 minutes for the sunscreen to fully set in.

Also, for those who wear make up, fret not as I do find that the Menturm works quite well as a primer and that any white cast would usually be covered up appropriately. I also find that it makes my makeup last at least a bit longer. I sweat at work, but I’ve found that despite this, it extended my base makeup longevity for a good few hours.

However, if you’re the type to be in a rush and don’t wear makeup on a daily basis, this might not be the sunscreen for you – if you’re not on the fairer side of the skin spectrum, that is.

Overall, I’d rate this a good 4/5. It’s quite gentle on my skin and I did not experience any irritation nor itchiness despite the various filters involved, and the white cast personally did not bother me too much. But as always, YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary). I’d definitely recommend giving it a shot if you don’t mind the potential white cast!
