[REVIEW] Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence SPF 50 PA ++++

Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence SPF 50 PA ++++ Review:

Klairs is a well known k-beauty brand whose tagline is “simple, but enough”. The focus on simplicity carries on into their product packaging, which has a minimalist aesthetic, and with their focus on simple formulations. Moreover, Klairs claim not to use colorants, alcohol, parabens or artificial fragrances in their products.

This particular product, Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence SPF 50 PA ++++, is vegan and not tested on animals. Other Klairs products are not tested on animals, but may or may not be vegan.

+ According to the brand’s website “The Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence SPF 50 PA++++ is an everyday sun protector for sensitive skin.

+ As is it water-based, it holds a gel-type texture to give a soft weightless and light finish.

+ Also with its high SPF and PA level, it completely guards the skin against UVA, UVB without leaving any greasiness or white cast.

The packaging is simple but functional. Being a tube rather than a jar is functional and hygenic, and the tube’s cap is easily replaced and everything feels sturdy without being over the top. The color scheme and labeling are very in line with other Klairs products – sleek and minimalist but still stylish.

I have been using this sunscreen for almost a month now and have not noticed any extra clogs or acne as a result of using this product. This is surprising to me as the sunscreen’s texture is very thick – it takes a while to absorb and requires quite a lot of rubbing in.

Despite the thick texture, there is no no stickiness or white cast (although I am quite pale, so white cast is not usually an issue for me). Once it has dried down, the finish is very moisturizing without leaving a ‘film’ on top of the skin. It feels a little bit like a nice blanket on top of the skin.

I can also use foundation/ BB cream on top of this with no foundation primer (after giving it 15 minutes to settle on the skin) with no problem.

One important thing to note is that while this sunscreen has a pleasant citrus scent, this probably comes from the orange oil that is present in the formulation.

This is quite sneaky as Klairs claim not to use any “artificial fragrances” in their products, but I cannot see any purpose that the orange oil has other than to create fragrance.

Moreover, citrus oils can be sensitizing for sensitive skin types, so although this product is purportedly suitable for those who have sensitive skin, I would advise caution to those with sensitive skin types or impaired skin barrier conditions like dermatitis or eczema. Saying that, I have mild rosacea and have used this product with no issue.

This product works wonderfully for me – at the moment. Since it is winter and cold outside/ dry and warm inside the moisturizing properties of this sunscreen are appreciated.

However, for more oily skin types and especially during summer or if you live somewhere hot and humid I would not imagine that this sunscreen would absorb well and would be too thick.

For other skin types (combination, dry, normal) and during colder months, this product works well. It is quite good value for money when one considers the size (80ml) in conjunction with the price (around 23 USD).

Overall I will continue to use this, and repurchase for the colder months, but then switch to a lighter sunscreen for the summer months (my mainstay is Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel UV SPF50+ PA++++)
