[Review] Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect First Serum 2x Essential

Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect First Serum 2x Essential Review:

Skinfood is one of the popular brands in the Korean Beauty industry. While some of their products could be a hit and miss for some, their Black Sugar line is quite impressive and very famous among K-beauty fans. My sister was one of those who had no luck with some of their products, but a friend of mine kept on praising Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect First Serum 2x Essential, claiming that it was always sold out at the store. Well, after a lot of convincing, eventually I caved in!

It claims to be a multi-functioning serum with black sugar extract that exfoliates, hydrates and soothes skin.

Achieve a smoother, clearer complexion with a combination of moisture rich black sugar and Cheongju, a traditional Korean wine

Volume: 30 ml (deluxe sample)

How to use:

Since it is a first serum, it is advised to be used right after cleansing. Dispense some of the product onto a cotton pad and wipe your face from inside out to gently exfoliate dead skin and impurities. Then pat gently to ensure total absorption.

I like to leave it to completely dry first before moving on to my next step in my routine.

My skin type: Combination to oily skin/minor PIH

Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect First Serum 2x Essential Review:

I bought the deluxe sample in 30 ml which came in a plastic dark brown bottle and it didn’t come with a set of cotton pads like the full size would so I just used it with my regular cotton pads.

Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect First Serum 2x Essential Review

My first impressions when I first used it; the texture is very watery and runny; it has a slight yellowish tint to it and; it smelled like sweet caramel candy (I guess that’s what the caramel in the ingredients list was for).

It has Glycolic Acid (AHA) and Salicylic Acid (BHA) in the listed ingredients but both are in very low percentages.

Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect First Serum 2x Essential Review

I’ve been using this product for a little over a month now. At the beginning I was still experimenting on the usage, whether to use it with cotton pads every time, or to use it at night only, or figuring whether to wait for it to fully dry or not.

Now that I have found the best way to use it, I use it every day, AM and PM right after cleansing before my lotion and essence. From the first week of usage I could already see the effects it gave to my skin!

My face became smooth and the best part is my acne scars were started to fade! My acne scars has visibly lessen now that I used it for a month. My family members were also commenting on how my skin got a lot better compared to before.

All in all, I LOVE IT! It has helped in improving my skin tremendously. But I am still debating whether to repurchase it though. Now that my skin has already improved so much, I’m thinking of finding other products for tackling other skin problems after this but I would finish using it up first and see whether I can live without it and decide then 😛

I would recommend this product to someone who has problems with skin texture and wants to fade their acne scars but don’t expect them to disappear overnight. It is suitable for people with normal/combination skin. YMMV.

    • Hi! No problem at all and thanks for reading the review! I believe you can use a pH balancing or exfoliating toner before the first serum if you want to but I personally don’t because the first serum itself already gave a little exfoliation. But if it’s a hydrating toner, it’s best to use AFTER the first serum as it can be quite drying sometimes. I hope this helps! 🙂
