[REVIEW] The Face Shop Herb Day 365 Lemon Cleansing Foam

The Face Shop Herb Day 365 Lemon Cleansing Foam Review:

What makes a good cleanser? It cleanse your skin well, yet not disrupt your natural skin barrier. Cleansing is the most important and the most fundamental step in your skincare routine. If you do not clean your skin well enough, you’d better throw all of your skincare products to the trashbin because they would do little good to your skin. I must confess that I’ve never really invested time or done any research into my cleanser. *sorry my skin barrier* So this is the final call for everyone to be serious when it comes to choose your appropriate cleanser.

Let’s get back to our cleanser today. I got this from my visit to the newly opened The Face Shop showroom located near my house. The price got my attention at first. It was about $8 for 1 tube of 170ml. Sounds economical. Herb Day 365 cleansing foam is a range of product that offers 5 scents: Aloe Vera, Lemon, Mung Beans, Peach and Cherry. I believe The Face Shop’s target audience for this product is people who have tight budget and want to have an experience with the brand. Nevertheless, I will not buy this product again.

The Face Shop Herb Day 365 Lemon Cleansing Foam Review:

Let’s update your knowledge about pH level a little bit.

Our skin barrier is called acid mantle. The name indicates that the skin barrier is acidic: its pH level is between 4.5 and 5.5. This barrier does 2 crucial tasks:

  1. It keeps water into your skin so that it stays soft and hydrated.
  2. It keeps germs, bacteria, and pollutants out of the skin, preventing infections and irritations.

Why would pH of your skin and of your cleanser matter? The skin barrier can only do its job if it is intact. In addition, anything you put on your skin that is higher or lower in pH level can affect the skin barrier by raising or lowering its pH level accordingly.

Keeping all of those information mentioned in mind, I should understand that cleansing would too change the skin’s pH level.

Now I am convinced that by using inappropriate cleanser is one of the main causes why my skin can never clear up. Moreover, it always has the following signals sometimes:

  • Skin feeling dried out
  • Skin feels tight
  • Skin becomes more sensitive
  • Acne and breakouts never clear up

After doing more research and checking out the pH level of this cleanser, I threw it away without hesitance. I then feel terribly regret for having done bad things to my skin and partly understand why I can never clear my skin up.

Skincare is like a journey to discover what is good and what is bad for you. It’s just like the search for the love of your life. *sigh*

Now let’s jump to my detailed review:

First Impression:

Packaging:

No doubt that one of the main reasons why I decided to get the product is its simple yet eye-catching packaging. The tone color is mild yellow and the demonstration images look fresh.

The tube design of the product aids in convenience and hygiene aspect when using the product for a long time (since it has only 1 big size 170ml, which could be used up in 3-4 months).

Next impression must be the citrusy scent. I absolutely adore the fresh and lemon scent of this product. Maybe the most impressive aspect of this product is its scent. Really relaxing. Sometimes when I feel under weather, I may even open the bottle just to take a deep breath in and enjoy that lemon scent.

Texture:

I guess the texture of this cleanser is not much different from a conventional one. It is a milky soft paste and when mixed with water, it will turn into soft foam.

pH level:

9 without water => 9.5 when mixed with tap water. Remember, this is not a recommended pH level for a cleansing product. It is way too high and surely will strip your excess oil together with your nature oil to protect your skin.

After use:

My skin is squeaky clean, which is understandable because of the high pH level of the cleanser. We all know this is not what we want. One day I was in the middle of something and after cleansing, I did not apply toner (stupid me, right?).

30 minutes later, I realized my skin was in a not-so-favorable state. It was as if some kind of film laid on top of the skin. Fine lines started to appear. I cannot feel my skin’s flexibility as it normally was. At that time, I could not explain why.

I thought my skin was drying out, so I spray mineral water on it. This actually did not help the situation. After the mineral water evaporated, my skin felt irritated again. If the skin is left alone for a long time enough, it will pump a massive amount of oil, which is unpleasant to look at.

At first I did not understand why, now I do. The pH level of my skin was raised and the natural oil was ripped off. My skin could not balance the pH level itself and this makes it so uncomfortable. Now that I know, I feel so guilty and bad cause I have not treated my skin as well as it deserves.

Ingredient list analysis:

In terms of cosdna, this cleanser may do more harm than good to your skin. Staying at the second and third ingredient in the list are Mystyric Acid and Stearic Acid: acne triggerer level 3 and 2 respectively. Moreover, maybe almost all of the preservatives in this world are stacked into this tube of cleanser!

With Propylparaben, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben, the safety index of these ranks from 4 to 7! Bear in mind that the purpose of the index is more inclined to assess whether long-term injury of skin, cells or the human body and that the lower the index is the better.

Regarding the moisturizing ingredients, I would say they did add in the product: we have stearic acid and glycerin. These ingredients are supposed to replace what’s been stripped from the skin during cleansing. However, my skin still feels squeaky. I guess the moisturizing ingredients cannot make up enough what’s been ripped off.

My mother and I used this cleanser together and we soon finished it within a month and 1 week. Since cleanser is a wash off product, it should not directly cause your breakouts.

However, it could well be the indirect factor to make your skin less healthy and more prone to acne in long term.

Obviously I will not repurchase this. Further suggestion for you upon choosing a cleanser: For oily skin like mine, and probably I suppose for every skin type, you should get the cleanser with pH level that is as close as your natural skin pH level (4.5 ~6).

In long term, high pH level cleanser might annoy the skin barrier and prevent the skin from functioning properly. Thus, you may encounter endless acne breakouts and very acne-prone skin. Please also check for ingredient list and opt out ones that have harsh surfactants and choose one with gentle surfactants like cocamidopropyl betaine that will not be irritant.
