[REVIEW] The Face Shop Oil Specialist Brightening Cleansing Oil with Prune

The Face Shop Oil Specialist Brightening Cleansing Oil with Prune Review:

This is the first ever cleansing oil of my life and I got it without checking the reviews or ingredient list whatsoever. I still remember that evening when I got into The Face Shop showroom to get me a decent moisturiser. After getting me a moisturiser, I wandered around and the saleslady introduced the cleansing oil to me.

I believe every girl would understand that situation when you just intended to buy 1 and you ended up buy more than 3. I mean, I believe I am not alone. *feeling guilty to my wallet*There were 3 different kinds of cleansing oils at the time: Pore clean, Deep firming and Brightening. As I needed to brighten my skin tone a bit, I chose the Brightening one.

– A brightening cleansing oil that brightens dull skin tone.

– A cleansing oil formulated with prune extract and grape seed oil gently removes long-wearing makeup and helps removes blackheads and dullness.

(I intended to copy paste the text, but dunno why I cannot find the ingredient list in text elsewhere, even on the website of The Face Shop. Hence, I retype from the list on the package itself and I believe that only on Cosmeperks can you find a full ingredient list of this product. :D)

The Face Shop Oil Specialist Brightening Cleansing Oil with Prune Review:

I have already used up this little guy in 3.5 months. Therefore, I believe my review would give you a persuasive perspective. Let’s jump to the detailed review.

The Face Shop Oil Specialist Brightening Cleansing Oil with Prune Review

For my face, I would go with 3 pumps of oil. The first impression is the mild and relaxing scent of the oil. I believe the scent is very familiar, just like that of products for baby. The texture is watery and light upon applying.

I will elaborate this review based on ingredient analysis. You can see that top of the ingredient list is mineral oil. This ingredient is quite controversial when it comes to its efficacy. Moreover, it has been charged with being comodogenic, carcinogenic, and suffocating your skin.

However, worry no more since I’ve done the homework for you. Science studies have proven that mineral oil may even be beneficial to protect your natural skin barrier. To be short, mineral oil that is used in skincare products is already refined and is free from all the nasties. Now you can rest assured to use the products with mineral oil in them.

I would like to deliberate more on usage instruction provided by the brand. The process below is based on my personal experience for the past 3.5 months and I did not encounter any break outs.

To correctly use this cleansing oil (or any kind of cleansing oil I believe), you need to follow 4 steps:

Step 1: apply appropriate amount as instructed. You may wonder. How much is “appropriate”? Well, normally, it would be about 3 pumps.

Step 2: Massage gently in circular motion and start from your forehead. Use your ring fingers to do the massage because these fingers has the least pressure on your face. (You would not want to be too harsh on your face).

Recommended duration: 2-3 minutes for makeup and 1 minute if you only apply sunscreen.

Step 3: Use some water to turn the oil into some kind of milky and thicker texture. I just wet my hands and apply that water onto my face to get the milky look, just as you are applying a cleanser on your face.

Step 4: Clean thoroughly with warm water. Recommended duration: [amount of time that you spent in step 2] + 1 minute. For example, you massaged your face with oil in 2 minutes. Then, you should spend 3 minutes to clean your face with water. It is crucial that you do not leave any residues left. After this step, you should follow with a low pH cleanser to ensure that your skin is clean and ready for further skincare steps.

Let’s get back to the ingredient list. As you can see, the next 5 ingredients are all common substances that are used as emollient, emulsifier or solvent. This suggests the fact that more than 50% the volume of the product is mineral oil and a combination of additional substances. By this it means that the product will primarily help you remove your makeup just as any drugstore cleansing oil. I believe this is proved by my own experience.

The Face Shop Oil Specialist Brightening Cleansing Oil with Prune Review

It has removed my makeup and sunscreen pretty well and easily. However, regarding to the brightening marketing point, I could not see any noticeable change in my skin tone. I guess it is understandable as all the seed extract and the goodies stay in the bottom of the list. Hence, the concentration would be minimal and would not be enough to make any change.

I bought this for nearly $20 at the showroom. On Amazon, it is sold at $19.5. I believe this price point may hinder many users to choose it. Moreover, you have many alternatives with well below $20 and they will do the same job as this product do. That’s why I will not repurchase this product and look for other affordable options.

The one thing I love about this product is the relaxing scent that it brings. It really helps encouraging me to look forward to cleaning and taking care of my skin every night. If you do not know what to start with when it comes to the cleansing oil adventure, Brightening Cleansing Oil with prune may be a not-so-bad choice.
