[REVIEW] The Face Shop x MARVEL Anti-Darkening Cushion SPF50+ PA+++ | V203 Natural Beige

The Face Shop x MARVEL Anti-Darkening Cushion SPF50+ PA+++ | V203 Natural Beige Review:

I came across this compact while shopping the K-Beauty section of an online Asian fashion and beauty site. Because the lid of the cushion was themed to Captain America’s shield, I thought it was clever and a fun design. Originally I purchased it on the site I was perusing but they were unable to fulfill my order, resulting in a long search to locate an online retailer who still stocked the cushion for a fair price. Eventually I located one on a US site and bought it right away.

Volume: 15g

How to use:

Use the cushion applicator press the sponge side onto the product until there is enough on it. Gently pat the sponge side of the applicator to your skin, smoothing along your face to blend in the foundation. Foundation can be applied once or built up overtime for more coverage or as needed.

My Skin Type: Normal with occasional dryness and acne

Prior to purchasing the cushion, I visited a Face Shop location in H Mart and the clerk was kind enough to match me to the correct shade, which was V203 for their warmer skin tones. This helped me to determine the correct shade to purchase once I found a retailer who stocked it. The V shades are intended for warmer tones and the N shades are for cooler tones – 4 different shades available.

The container is my favorite part of this cushion – it is sturdy and the detailing in the shield design is fantastic. Because you have to buy a refill once this one is used up, I liked that you could reuse the container and it has a fun design that makes you want to use it again.

The cushion applicator has a cute little ribbon that serves as the strap with MARVEL printed on it – too cute to use, so I replaced with a regular makeup sponge for application purposes. (No replacement applicators are available for this compact.)

True to the product’s ingredient list, it has a distinct lemon scent – not overpowering but it is noticeable when you apply the foundation and for a brief period while wearing it. (It does wear off eventually.) When first using the cushion foundation, I had to press very firmly onto the product to load the sponge with product.

Overtime it became easier to pick up foundation – keep in mind you will have to “prime” the cushion for the first few applications in order to distribute product onto the applicator before using.

The formula was a bit streaky when I applied it on my face and it required a bit of blending with my fingers after the fact. I noticed that my face looked very pale after the product was applied to my face and blended. (Not an ideal look.)

I noted it took about 5-10 minutes for it to settle and adjust to my skin tone after application, but it still looked like I was wearing a foundation a few shades lighter than my skin tone. (This lighter look is likely due to the anti-darkening properties of the formula.)

I liked that it is lightweight and doesn’t feel like I’m wearing foundation. I layered this over a primer but you can wear it without one.

I did not feel a need to reapply throughout the day – formula was pretty good at staying put through a full day.

I would rate this 3/5 overall. The packaging is great and I’d keep it after the product is used up. It is easy to apply but it requires a lot of blending to make it look more natural with your skin, especially if you are on the warmer side.

I wasn’t a fan of the end result after several hours because sometimes I looked almost too fair. When removed at the end of the day, my skin did appear lighter and a little brighter, true to its claims. While the fragrance wasn’t irritating to my skin, it was a bit much after a few uses and I would have preferred something unscented. If you’re sensitive to scented products, I’d recommend passing on this one.

  1. Hi there,
    I purchased the same one but from a korean seller. Actually the N is for warm undertones and V is for pink ones.
    -V203 natural beige (red & bright skin)
    -N203 warm beige (yellow & natural skin).

    • Hello, I only quoted what was told to me when I was matched for the shade. It’s likely the gal helping me got things mixed up. 🙂 Thank you!
