[REVIEW] The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG

The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG Review:

I’ve had permanent dark circles under my eyes ever since I can remember. Even in older photos I find from when I was 2 years old, you can still see the circles. It mostly happens because of my bone structure but my skin also has some issues, otherwise, it would’ve been pretty pointless to try anything to reduce dark circles.

I’ve tried multiple vitamins and stuff but I didn’t manage to get rid of the problem. When I first discovered The Ordinary, I just browsed on their website and randomly found this. I had already heard of the difference caffeine solution can make to dark circles and the antioxidant power of EGCG so I found it promising.

– This product has a light-textured formula and it contains 5% caffeine.

– It’s supplemented with highly-purified Epigallocatechin Gallatyl Glucoside (EGCG) from green tea leaves. Due to these, this product can reduce the look of dark circles and puffiness.

Aqua (Water), Caffeine, Maltodextrin, Glycerin, Propanediol, Epigallocatechin Gallatyl Glucoside, Gallyl Glucoside, Hyaluronic Acid, Oxidized Glutathione, Melanin, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract, Urea, Pentylene Glycol, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Xanthan gum, Lactic Acid, Dehydroacetic Acid, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Propyl Gallate, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Ethoxydiglycol, Benzyl Alcohol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol.

How to use:

1. At the very last steps of your routine, massage a small amount onto the eye contour.

2. Use it both in the morning and evening.

Volume: 30ml

My Eye Skin Type: My eye contour area, as mentioned above, is suffering from dark circles, puffiness and also weird pores; to top all that my eyes are very sensitive in general and react a lot.

The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG Review:

I’ll get straight to the point. This product is a miracle, only for the first two months. I started getting results from the first couple of days I used this. My dark circles became way less obvious and my eyes stopped being puffy every morning (am I the only one who has a completely different eye shape in the morning and in the evening?).

Thanks to that I finally started looking more awake and present, instead of looking like I haven’t slept for days (I might be overreacting a tiny bit). Personally, that’s all I wanted from this product, to reduce my dark circles and as I said, I was completely satisfied with it until I closed 2 months using it.

From then the effects completely disappeared and I’d say my eye contour has taken a turn for the worse. The dark circles came back and a weird thing started happening to my skin; (I don’t have the slightest idea if it has to do with the product of not), my under eye area started losing its elasticity and with the slightest move the skin doesn’t get back to its normal position which obviously, causes wrinkles, very fast!

The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG Review

This product’s texture is like a typical serum but also, sticky. Usually I use a tiny bit on the upper side of my eyes and it really feels weird and sticky on my eyelid. For the first 10 minutes the skin doesn’t absorb it so the eye contour looks really shiny but after it gets absorbed you can’t tell it’s there. It doesn’t have a particular smell.

The container is just like half of The Ordinary products, I can’t complain, I really like their dispenser. Also, the container protects the formula from the UV rays as ECGC is sensitive to the UV rays.

The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG Review

There’s a thing that I really don’t like about this product. Thanks to its thick texture, after I use it and then proceed to close it, a bit of the product goes to the sides and after it stays there it solidifies. It doesn’t affect its performance (I think; ), however, I find it a bit gross since it feels dirty.

I’ve seen many people use it on the rest of their face but I don’t have any issue on my face that it could work against. That’s why I asked my mother to try it on her dark spots that she got during pregnancy. She used it twice daily for a couple of months but there was no difference.

I haven’t stopped using this product because even though it stopped being amazing, it’s still better than anything else I’ve tried and on top of that, very affordable. Until I find something that works better and isn’t at a skyrocketed price, I’ll probably keep repurchasing.

I totally recommend this to anyone who struggles with dark circles but I still don’t know what to do with the effects that disappeared (yes, I’ve tried not using it and then re-introducing it).

  1. In my case the only thing that works solving under eye puffiness is sleeping!^^ I also use the KLAIRS Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop which really improves fine lines. I felt like the ordinary caffeine serum did work in the beginning, helping to make me look more awake, but after a weeek maybe my skin got used to it and i didnt notice much of a difference.

  2. Hello! I have the same problem as you, hereditary dark circles under my eyes, which I’ve been struggling with since ever. I’m interested in this product but I read many reviews that said it causes wrinkles on the undereye area. I see that you noticed some similar effects too. How is your undereye area now? Did you get any wrinkles so far or any signs? I’m really scared of wrinkles. Thank You!
